A head on collision on Dog Bar Road last evening around 6:30 left one driver dead at the scene. 63 year old John Harvey Phipps was dring a 1991 Toyota northbound on Dog Bar Road just south of Wheeler Acres road at approximately 50 miles per hour. Approaching in the northbound direction, a 38 year old Grass Valley man, Jason Youngman and his 13 year old passenger were in a Ford going about 35 miles per hour. As the two vehicles drew closer, Phipps allowed his Toyota to cross the center line colliding head on into the Ford causing the Ford to overturn onto it’s right side. The Toyota was propelled into a spin. Phipps sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding paramedics from Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. Youngman and his passenger sustained minor injuries and declined medical treatment. Dog Bar Road was closed to traffic for 3 hours and a detour set up on Wheeler Acres as the accident was investigated. The CHP says there were no obvious signs of alcohol or drug use that contributed to the cause of the collision, however the investigation is still ongoing.
