Feds Fund PILT But State is Still Lacking

The U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Sally Jewell, earlier this week, announced Federal Payment in Lieu of Taxes for use of 214,660 acres of land in Nevada County. As a result of selling or leasing the land to the federal government, the county loses property taxes. Therefore the federal government provides a Payment in Lieu of Taxes for the property. Supervisor Nate Beason says Nevada County is receiveing 348,890 dollars of PILT funds for 2014 and the feds have been pretty good about making payment.

On the other hand, the state of California also is supposed to pay PILT money when the Department of Fish and Wildlife buys or leases land from the county.

Beason says that PILT money from the federal government goes back into the county general fund and is used to fund infrastructure and existing services.
