Fire Fee Bills in the Mail

The contentious CAL FIRE Fire Fee program is beginning its third year and residents can expect to receive a bill in the mail sometime in the near future. CAL FIRE Spokesperson Daniel Berlant says the revenue generated from the fee pays for vital fire prevention services within the State Responsibility Area often referred to as the SRA.

The fee also funds fire related law enforcement activities such as fire cause determination and arson investigation. The State Responsibility Area covers 31 million acres across the state.

The Fire Fee has been a static 150 dollars per dwelling in the SRA with a 35 dollar discount for residents that live in areas that also include a local fire agency. Most residents were being billed 115 dollars. However, Berlant says that this year there is a slight increase to the fee.

Berlant says roughly 98% of the the residences paying the fee live within an fire protection district funded by local taxes. Those residents not living in a fire district of some sort will pay $152.33

CAL FIRE has established a website, www.FirePreventionFee.orgĀ  which contains comprehensive information about the fee and helpful links. Additionally, a customer service call center is staffed Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (except holidays). The call center number is 1-888-310-6447.

The Board of Equalization is responsible for collecting the fee and began mailing the bills alphabetically by county on March 3rd.
