Ernst-Ulrich says when the restrictions are lifted, recreationists may light back-country campfires with a valid permit; smoke outside of designated sites; and operate internal combustion engines off forest roads and trails where appropriate.

Ernst-Ulrich advises forest visitors to continue to use fire-safe practices. Never leaving campfires or lit lanterns and stoves unattended and making sure equipment and off-road vehicles have working spark arresters. Other wildfire prevention practices can be found at fs.usda.gov.
