Fire season officially begins today and Cal Fire Stations are ready. CalFire Public Information Officer Daniel Berlant says the process has been underway for weeks now.*
A third year of drought conditions has made the fuels extremely dry as has been evidenced in the large number of early season fires.*
Berlant says homeowners need to do their part by maintaining 100 feet of defensible space, clear all pine needles and leaves from the yard, roof and rain gutters. Trim branches six feet from the ground and landscape with fire resistant/tolerant plants.*
Berlant says Cal Fire has been ramping up to meet the elevated threat of wildfire since January and this transition into fire season in the northern region is more than a month ahead of schedule.
