Fire Started in Homeless Camp

Several 9-1-1 calls were received Friday night shortly after 9 p.m. from motorists  reporting a vegetation fire in the Deadman’s Flat area that was visible from State Highway 20 at the South Ponderosa area.  Nevada County Consolidated Battalion Chief Jerry Funk says  when they arrived they found about a 1 acre fire burning in heavy fuels.

Crews from Engine 1 and Engine 2 hiked in and began constructing hand line around the fire.  Cal-Fire resources utilized 2 engine companies, a hand crew and a bulldozer to gain access to the fire.  The fire was contained at 10:45 pm.  It was determined  the fire originated in a transient camp and remains under investigation.
