It’s been about 2 years since the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District put three surplus station properties up for sale. And now Chief Jim Turner says transactions are being completed. The station on Quaker Hill Cross Road will be converted into a home. There are no plans yet for the former stations on East Lime Kiln and Ridge Roads. The stations were abandoned over 10 years ago and Turner says maintenance and repairs have not been cost effective…

Turner says sales of the stations will bring in over half-a-million dollars. Meanwhile, staffing at the current stations appears to be adequate, with a youth intern program also a big reason….

Nevada County Consolidated now has 36 employees and Turner says about 80% were once interns. They’ve been sharing response to incidents, including medical calls, with the Grass Valley and Nevada City fire departments for 10 years, under a Joint Operations Agreement that Turner says has also been a great savings for taxpayers.
