The Fire Safe Council of Nevada County may be no more come the first of the year if they cannot secure more funding. Executive Director Joanne Drummond says the Budget Sub-committee met yesterday to determine the agency’s future.
The Fire Safe Council of Nevada County has been in business for 15 years and at the time there were only a hand full of councils in the state, now there are hundreds.
There has been some discussion at the state level that the State SRA Fee could provide grants for Fire Safe Councils, but that program has not been organized at the state level, as there is a legal challenge to the SRA fee from the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association still pending.
Between the fire wise communities, fuel breaks the chipping program and other programs of the Fire Safe Council, Drummond says about 80,000 people in the community have been helped. The Fire Safe Council is putting on a fundraiser Wine and Culinary Adventure event June 28th at Pilot Peak Winery that they are hoping the community will support.
