What’s believed to be the first-ever death in Nevada County from the West Nile virus has been reported. The name is not being released by the Public Health Department, due to medical confidentiality. Public Health officer Ken Cutler says the deceased is a senior citizen and is also the first confirmed fatality this year in California. He says the rareness of the local death is another illustration of how infrequent there is a serious illness from a mosquito bite…
Cutler says people 50 or older do have a higher chance of getting sick and are more likely to develop complications…
But Cutler says residents should still take precautions, including wearing long-sleeved clothing and repellent around sunrise and sunset. He says West Nile season is just getting started and usually lasts through September and into October, or until cooler and wetter weather persists.
