Forgery Case Linked to Mail Thefts in Nevada City

Investigation of fraudulent use of a credit card at the SPD store in Nevada City has led police to uncover stolen mail and possibly more identity theft victims.  Nevada City Police Officer Scott Goin says a female victim came into the police station yesterday to report unauthorized use of her credit card.

Police went to the store and were able to review surveillance tape and recognized the suspect in the video from prior law enforcement contact as 41 year-old Robert Ball. Officers from the Grass Valley Police Department and Nevada City Police located Ball at the Nevada City Inn at 760 Zion Street and made contact with him.

24 year-old Brittany Stewart was with Ball in the parking lot.  She was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Inside the  motel room officers also located 31 year-old Shawna Heinz hiding in the bathroom.

Inside the room officers recovered the credit card in the name of the victim and they also found several pieces of what appeared to be stolen mail, which is still being processed.

Goin says the stolen mail appears to be from inside Nevada City limits as well as from the county.  He says the Nevada City Police Department has taken numerous theft of mail cases since the first of the year.
