Free Cell Phones for Low Income Residents

Low income residents in Nevada County are now eligible for free cell phones and service. The offer comes through the Lifeline Assistance Program which already provides discounted basic telephone (landline) services to eligible California households.
Residents are eligible if they participate in at least one of a number of assistance programs

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
Federal Public Housing Assistance or Section 8
CalFresh, Food Stamps or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC)
Healthy Families Category A
National School Lunch Program (NSL)
Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)

Specific programs for native Americans include

Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance
Head Start Income Eligible (Tribal Only)
Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations
