Good news for people with traumatic brain injuries in Nevada County. The FREED Center for Independent Living has qualified for a grant worth 120-thousand dollars a year for each of the next three years to expand services. It also covers Yuba, Sutter, Butte, and Shasta counties. Executive Director Ana Acton says it’s the first time in about 20 years that the California Department of Rehabilitation has offered a competitive grant. And they’re still one of only seven sites in the state to receive the funding. Acton says the focus is on community re-integration…
Acton says the grant money allows more longterm care, including for people over 18 and who were not in the military…
Over 11-thousand residents in the five counties have been diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries. Acton says concussions are getting more serious attention, including recent legal actions filed by NFL players. She says FREED will use data from the sucess of the expanded services, in hopes of getting more funding beyond the life of this grant.
