Grass Valley has one of ten demonstration centers around the state that have launched a pilot speech technology program. Ana Acton, the director of the FREED Center for Independent Living, says it’s called Voice Options. It’s an iPad with applications that can be loaned to people with speech disabilities…
Acton says it’s hoped the iPad will allow people to be more easily understood, improving their independence…
Speech applications allow users to control an alternative voice. Users enter what they want to say and it’s voiced through speakers. Acton says the devices can be borrowed for a month. If the user determines a speech app on the iPad works well for them, they may apply for a long-term loan. The pilot program will run here for about a year and is funded by the California Public Utilities Commission. Acton says those who are interested in participating can call the FREED or go to their website.
