Gaines says another bill raises the standard deduction for personal income tax from 4-thousand to 5-thousand dollars, for individuals, and from 8 to 10-thousand dollars for married couples. He says California has among the highest personal income tax rates in the country. A third bill exempts hunting equipment from sales and use taxes in the first weekend of September, when deer hunting begins, and the first weekend in October, when waterfowl season begins. And the fourth bill exempts school supplies from being taxed during a weekend close to when classes resume in the fall.
