After blasting it recently, Nevada County’s Republican State Senator is now launching an effort to repeal gas tax and motorist user fees approved by the Legislature, as part of a $52 billion transportation improvement plan….
Ted Gaines says says current gas tax and user fee revenue has frequently been diverted to other uses. The plan includes a constitutional amendment that would not allow that. But Gaines says he’s exploring every possible avenue, including through legislation, to stop the plan….
The 12-cent increase in the gas excise tax would take effect on November 1st, while increases in registration fees are scheduled to take effect on January 1st. As for getting enough support from Democrats to repeal the plan, Gaines points to the effort to recall one Democratic State Senator for voting for it as an indication of growing public opposition that might persuade other party lawmakers to second thoughts.
