It’s not every day that a candidate for governor visits Nevada County, but that’s what’s happening this afternoon. Assemblyman Travis Allen of Huntington Beach will be speaking at a local Republican Party meeting. Allen wants to repeal the gas tax, passed by the legislature to fund highway improvements. Allen says he can see how people would reluctantly agree to the tax to improve the state’s roads, but says the state already has enough money to fund improvements without a tax increase…
It was hoped there would be petitions at the meeting for people to sign to repeal the tax, but they are not ready yet. A ballot initiative is proposed for 2018. Allen sees himself as the leading G-O-P candidate against three prominent democrats, with the goal to finish in the top two in the June primary, and then face one of them in the general election in November…
The three guys are San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaragosa, and State Treasurer John Chiang. Allen is the featured speaker at the Nevada County Repubican Party’s ‘Issues and Ideas’ presentation from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the Nevada County Association of Realtors on Crown Point Circle in Grass Valley. There is an admission charge.
