Grand Jury Critical of NID Fees and Surcharges

The latest Nevada County Grand Jury report is critical of the Nevada Irrigation District. Foreman Dave Anderson says it started with a citizen complaint about fees associated wtih paying water bills. And that led to an investigation regarding other surcharges. He says the Grand Jury finds that NID’s three-dollar-and-seventy-five-cent credit card charge for water bills is out of step with the billing practices of many other utilities and retailers…

Anderson says the Grand Jury also examined the monthly collection of a-dollar-90 per-customer to offset state and county fees for mandatory reporting compliance to the State of California. It calculates that in 2019 NID may have collected over 450-thousand dollars in additional fees to cover around 399-thousand dollars in out-of-pocket costs. They recommend that the Board of Directors hold a public review of its vendor contract regarding credit card payments for water bills…

Anderson says the Grand Jury also recommends that NID initiate a thorough consumer complaint system.
