The Nevada County Civil Grand Jury is issuing its reports for the year–eight of them are out this week covering a range of investigations. One of the more scathing reports concludes that the elections department continues to do a poor job of training its poll workers. Jury Foreperson Tom Achter says the elections workers care, but they just aren’t good teachers…
He says the training is more professing than hands-on. Another investigation looked at the relationship between the nine local elementary school districts and the high school district. Achter says they need to talk to each other more…
The grand jury concluded that middle school kids could be better prepared for high school than they are now. Other reports were less controversial. The grand jury recommends an additional security camera for the jail, found that several agencies are helping educate the public about the bark beetle infestation but there isn’t one coordinated effort, and found that the Higgins Fire District could have done a better job demonstrating the need for a special assessment–a ballot measure that has repeatedly failed. By law, the groups and agencies that were under investigation must file a written response to the report, but are not required to follow the recommendations. Achter says a couple more reports have not been released yet, and probably will be within the next week.
