Grant Funds Mammograms

Insight Imaging in Grass Valley has been  able to provide 160 mammograms free of charge to women through a grant from the Komen Foundation. Radiologist Dr. Melisa Agness says that was double the number they were expecting to do under the grant. She says  82 percent of the women served had not had a recent mammogram and 95 percent cited  financial reasons .

Last year Insight Imaging received their first grant from the Koman Foundation for $48,000. This year Insight Imaging  applied for  $60,000 because so many women in the community were still not getting mamograms. They should hear results in two weeks.   The Komen Foundation has also awarded $75,000 a year to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital  which is spent mostly for follow up biopsys which provides  the next level of care.

Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital is also able to provide no or low  cost mamograms from funds raised at the BSM Triathlon annual event.  Dr. Agness says a Komen Foundation representative visited Insight Imaging last week and was pleased  to see how they were making use of their grant funds.   The Komen Foundation has been receptive to Nevada County applications for grants because Nevada County has higher rates of late diagnosis of breast cancer and we are a rural community with less access.  Anyone in need of a mamogram is encouraged to call insight imaging at 273-2720.
