Grass Valley Kids Readying For Donation Day

It’s a Grass Valley tradition that goes back 131 years. Tomorrow (Friday) is Donation Day, where school children throughout the area, and others, will parade through downtown, bringing canned food and other items to be donated to the needy. The event is put on by the Grass Valley Ladies Relief Society, and Scholarship Director Marcie Ellers says the tradition goes back to the Great Panic of 1883, and an invalid woman in a house near Church and Neal Streets…

The event has evolved quite a bit since then, and Ellers estimates about a thousand kids will take part, weather permitting….

Two years ago, the children did not march because of stormy weather, and a threat of snow. If it is not raining, the parade will begin tomorrow at 10am. Downtown streets and some freeway offramps will be shut down around 9:30. The parade usually lasts less than an hour.
