For most of  us making the monthly mortgage payment, or the monthly rent payment is as easy as not spending all your money.  Some people get lucky and receive a windfall of money.  Now combine these two situations, bad at savings, lucky with large sums of cash coming your way.  This extremely small subset of humanity has just one thought – pay the whole year’s rent at once and be done with it!

Sounds like a great idea doesn’t it?  No worries about late fees, no worries about the gas bill being too high, just plain old no worries.  Just hand the lump sum over to the landlord.  Even better if the landlord is a trustworthy person, say like a policeman.  Who shows up to collect his whole years rent in uniform.  At which time the landlord see’s a whole lot more cash laying around the place.  Being a curious sort the landlord does a little investigating….  Yup, the cash is stolen property.

At least the stupid crook’s room and board is paid for, for the next 5 to 15….
