California Governor Jerry Brown signed groundwater legislation into law earlier today and not everyone is happy about it. North State Senator Jim Nielson says the three bills were a rush job and ran through the legislature before most legislators knew what they were voting on.
Nielson tells KNCO that the bills remove local control and gives the state too much authority.
Nielson says that groundwater can be managed through other ways that recharge the aquifers rather than set up “water police” to monitor well use. The Water Bond deals with much of that and was negotiated in the open not behind closed doors.
Senator Nielson says he believes that government will go after domestic well next.
Nielsen says its not too late to undo what has just been done.
Senator Jim Nielsen says it makes more sense to address the water overdraft problem or over commitment of water resources rather than go after groundwater.
