The Nevada County elections office has counted the ballots already received for the Higgins Fire Protection District special election to increase property assessments from $25 a year to $141.00 . Nevada County Assistant Clerk Recorder Sandra Sojberg says so far the return of ballots is very small compared to the number of ballots sent out.

Of the ballots returned 1,578 voted yes for the increase and 1,104 voted no. Soberg says there still could be hundreds of ballots out there that have not been recorded yet due to a new state law known as “Postmark Plus 3.”
