Should the Nevada Joint Union High School District be a so-called ‘sanctuary zone’ when it comes to illegal immigration? The student represent on the Board of Trustees wants to have that discussion. Morgan Margulies, a senior at Nevada Union, plans on drafting a resolution to be considered by the school board at an upcoming meeting. Margulies says he is seriously concerned that the federal government could come in and possibly arrest or deport some students…
Margulies has only been the student representative on the board for one meeting, so he says he’s not sure how the elected board members feel about the issue. District Superintendent Louise Johnson is not a voting member, but she is encouraging Marguiles to at least bring the topic to the forefront…
Johnson says the resolution would be a ‘position statement’, and the board may decide not to take a stand on the highly controversial issue. Margulies plans to introduce his resolution at either the October or November board meeting.
