The survey also says rental car rates are down 13 percent from last year, but if you are flying, airfares are up 21 percent. Harris says if your drive is going to be a long one, you should leave early morning Wednesday to avoid the biggest rush, but also don’t forget that the trip home could be just as bad traffic-wise, if not worse…

Triple-A advises that you bring your patience with you, and also make sure you’ve done some routine maintenance on your vehicle before you leave, such as have the battery and charging system checked, and your tires properly inflated.
