Starting Thursday, a homeless camping on Placer County property is banned, under an ordinance passed by county supervisors. Supervisors passed it after a new shelter opened on the former DeWitt Center grounds on June first, which is also where much of the camping has been going on. Cordell says with all the campers leaving, that will necessitate a cleanup day, which is happening next Tuesday. She says belongings that have been left behind will be bagged and tagged and stored at the Sheriff’s Department, which will have a 90-day claim period. Meanwhile, the 90-day trial period for the shelter is up at the end of the month. At their meeting on the 18th, supervisors will discuss future options, including extending the current operations for up to another year, or possible expanding hours and even the shelter itself.
