Nevada County’s homeless shelter will be able to continue to provide extra beds the winter, without interruption, thanks to help from local merchants, and the county. The Executive Director of Hospitality House, Debbie McDonald, says the county had not been able to find the grant money they obtained last year, until just recently. The businesses donated $4,000. And now, McDonald says the county has gotten creative again and this time has obtained a $25,000 grant that also requires the shelter to connect people staying there with the food stamp program…

The grant will ensure services through the winter months, or through March, for 15 extra beds, also covering an additional staff member and meals. It will also allow the shelter to open at noon, instead of 2pm. In March, Hospitality House lost about half its operating budget from a HUD funding cut.
