With more online holiday shopping done every year, that also means more so-called “porch pirates”, with more packages being delivered, and often left unattended, on a porch or by a door. Grass Valley Police Sergeant Sara Perry says you can do a number of things to prevent that from happening, if you can’t have it land in your mailbox…
Other tips include asking the delivery company hold your package for pick up at its facility. Perry says a growing number of local UPS drivers have reported being followed by potential thieves…
Perry says you could also tell a neighbor you trust about an expected delivery and to watch for it. An estimated 23-million Americans have had packages stolen from their homes last year. She also advises that for residents who don’t have locking mail boxes that they make sure they collect their mail daily, to prevent the theft of cards, which can contain money and gift cards. She says mail left unattended in boxes overnight is at higher riske of being stolen.
