Hwy 49 Accident Sends two to Hospital

The California Highway Patrol reports a collision occurred on Highway 49 at Streeter Road shortly before 7 last evening that sent two people to the hospital by air ambulance.  68 year old Mike Cazares was driving  a 1985 Chevy Corvette southbound on State Route 49 approaching the intersection with Macy Place, across from Streeter Road, when according to witnesses, Cazares suddenly made a left turn across the highway directly ahead of oncoming northbound traffic.  71 year old Joseph Mortara of Penn Valley was driving a 2013 Ford F-150   northbound in the #2 lane and collided broadside with the Corvette.  Both vehicles went off the roadway. Cazares and his passenger, 38 year old Jerome Nelson of Auburn were severely injured and trapped within the Corvette and fire department personnel responded and used extrication tools to remove them from the vehicle.  Both Cazares and Nelson were then flown in separate helicopters to Sutter Roseville Medical Center in serious condition.  Mortara and his passenger, Dianna Mortara were complaining of pain but refused ambulance transport from the scene.  Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.  The CHP report says at this time, drugs and or alcohol are not considered to be a factor in the collision.
