Newell wins re-election with 55 percent of the vote to challenger David Alkire’s 45 percent.

Another incumbent to win last night was Holly Hermansen. She keeps her job as Nevada County Superintendent of Schools with a 53 percent to 47 percent over the challenger, Paul Haas.

Several county candidates ran unopposed for their offices. Tina Vernon for Treasurer-Tax Collector, Marcia Salter for Auditor-Controller, Sue Horner for Assessor, Keith Royal for Sheriff, and Greg Diaz for Clerk-Recorder.

Duane Strawser keeps his seat on the Nevada City City Council, adn Evans Phelps will join him. That race turned out to be a formality after Jonathan Valdman withdrew, but not in time to get his name off the ballot. Strawser picked up 259 votes, Phelps 212, and Valdman still got 73 votes.
