Internet Expansion For Nevada Co Moving Forward

Plans for expanding internet access to around 29-hundred homes in southeastern Nevada County continue to move forward. Spiral Internet in Nevada City says groundbreaking for the first of three phases of the gigabit fiber optic project is scheduled for this fall. It’ll start in the area of Highway 174 and Dog Bar Road down to the Placer County border. CEO John Paul says it’ll be completed in about two years….

Last December, the California Public Utilities Commission approved Spiral’s grant request of 16-point-7 million dollars, which was made nearly three years earlier for Phase One. A new Field Poll shows an increasing share of California residents now have internet access, up to 84-percent from 75-percent two years ago. But it says just 68-percent who make less than 22-thousand dollars a year report being online at home. Paul says many residents here must hold onto landline service because there’s spotty or no cell phone reception….

The Field Poll says much of the internet access increase is due to the growing prevalence of connected smart phones.
