It’s getting to be that time of year when deer are active and can potentially end up on the roadways of Nevada County.

CHP Officer Greg Tassone says that collisions involving deer increase this time of year. If you do come upon any animal on the roadway, Tassone says the best thing you can do is fight the instinct to turn sharply to avoid the animal.

Tassone says the safest thing to do is hold the wheel straight and apply the brakes.

If you are going to hit the animal, it is better to keep the vehicle straight.

Sometimes the collision is unavoidable, but by slowing before swerving you give your car and the animal a better chance of surviving the incident.

The CHP includes this instruction as part of all of all driver safety classes because deer and other animals are prevalent in Nevada County.
