Kids Summer Meals Program Begins

This is the first official day of summer vacation for K-12 Nevada County students. But there’ll be no gap in the free and healthy lunch program, in coordination with the Food Bank and local libraries. The program began at the Grass Valley Library in 2018. And Youth Services Librarian, Mellisa Hannum, says her branch has partnered with the school district’s Child Nutrition Services to also offer grab-and-go breakfasts this year…

That’s from 9:30 to 11am weekdays. Grab-and-go lunches are each weekday at noon, also now including the Madelyn Helling Library and the Penn Valley branch, where it’s each Wednesday. Grab-and-go is a byproduct of the pandemic, but Hannum says it’s also been a factor in these expansions…

The meals are available through July 30th. Hannum says there will also be a summer kick-off event at the Rood Center, on Wednesday, with fun activities from four to six pm.
