Legal Rights of Same Sex Couples Discussed Tonight

With same-sex marriage now legal in California and several other states, homosexual couples now have many of the same legal rights as heterosexual couples. With that in mind, the Nevada County Chapter of P-FLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians And Gays) is hosting a two-part program beginning tonight featuring local attorneys. Wilkerson says it was an estate planning case that led to the Supreme Court ruling that the federal Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitional. A woman whose same-sex spouse died, was charged 350-thousand dollars in estate taxes…

Wilkerson will speak tonight, followed a program next month on family law from attorney Joseph Bell. Tonight’s meeting is at the Unitarian Universalist Community of the Mountains (246 South Church Street) in Grass Valley at 7pm. The public is invited.
