Local Merchant Warms of Latest Scam

A local merchant is advising people in Nevada County of a new scam that is making the rounds in our area.  Tom Purington is the owner of Smiley’s Check Cashing on Joerske Drive and says he has stopped at least one victim from throwing away her money. He says the scammers start by altering legitimate business checks.

The checks have been from $1,500 (Fifteen Hundred dollars)   to $2,900  (Twenty Nine Hundred Dollars) . The person is told to cash the check then to forward a sizeable handling fee to a person named in the letter by  money order or Western Union.

As usual, if something seems  too good to be true, it probably is a scam.
