It’s a major step forward for a housing project in Nevada City that was first proposed 7 years ago. The City Planning Commission has approved a tentative map for the project, called The Grove, and sent it to the City Council for final consideration. It’s described by City Planner Amy Wilson as a mixed use 71-unit subdivision that would be located on a nearly 13-acre site on Providence Mine Road, adjacent to the Tech Center. While its affordability has been a point of contention, Wilson says the developer, who is from the Tech Center, is using what’s called an “affordable by design” concept”…
Wilson says 18 units have been set aside for low and moderate income tenants, which she says also meets the requirement of a new city ordinance. The City Council is scheduled to discuss the project at its meeting on May 10th. But Wilson says it’s unlikely construction could begin this year, with a lot of permitting and prep work left, including infrastructure, before a final map can be approved. But she says the first thing that will need to be taken care of is toxic cleanup…
Wilson says The Grove would increase the housing stock by 5%, which she says is a significant number for a town the size of Nevada City.
