Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park will reopen for limited weekend-only operations starting Friday, July 20th. The park that preserves the world’s largest hydraulic mine dating back to 1852 was on the State Parks Closure list and daily operations ceased last November. But Supervising Ranger of the Sierra Gold Sector Don Schmidt says a concerted effort by local groups will keep it open .

Field Guides, the Alden Olmstead Fund and Malakoff Diggins Parks Association also raised funds that Schmidt says will allow them to keep the park open 3 days a week.

Campgrounds at Malakoff Diggins will not be open, however three popular “miner’s cabins,” will be available for rent through Reserve America into early fall and again next spring. All park facilities and operations will close for the winter on Sunday, September 30, 2012, and will re-open May 1, 2013.
