Man Is Suspect and Person Of Interest In Shootings

A man has been identified as a suspect in the shooting and wounding of a member of the Placer County Search and Rescue team. Steve White was shot in August of last year near a campsite along the Yuba River in the town of Washington, while a pursuit and attempted murder suspect was being sought. Nevada County Sheriff’s Sergeant Bob Jakobs says evidence at the campsite was linked to 61-year-old Kurt Collins. But he says detectives had only released the name to area law enforcement agencies at the time…

Meanwhile, Jakobs says Collins is also a person of interest in the shooting death, in July of last year, of 67-year-old Michael Mahoney…

Mahoney’s family is offering a reward of $10,000. And, Jakobs says, Collins is also a person of interest in the disappearance, in October of 2003, of Joseph Murphy, who worked with Collins in prospecting for gold. Those who wish to provide information are encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit, at 265-1263.
