It’s spanned the South Yuba River for over a hundred years, but works begins today to replace the Maybert Road Bridge near the town of Washington with a brand new one. Nevada County Principal Civil Engineer Joshua Pack says while the bridge may be historical, it’s ranked as one of the worst bridges in the state…
It’s also too narrow, and emergency vehicles like fire engines can’t get over it. Because of the construction, access to the Golden Quartz picnic site and other properties east of the bridge will be prohibited, and county officials request that recreational traffic avoid the area until after the project is completed. Pack says a 475-thousand dollar federal grant was initially secured to fund the project, but those costs have gone up to about a million dollars…
Construction should be completed before the end of the year. The current bridge will be moved to Nevada City and used as a pedestrian bridge along a hiking trail. Historians are not exactly sure of the age of the bridge. Caltrans documents say the Maybert Road Bridge was constructed in 1915, while other publications suggest it was built in 1895.
