The superintendent of the Nevada Joint Union High School District says he doesn’t like the decision to have ‘drive through’ graduations, but also says it was the best option available. Brett McFadden says the district, and other schools in the county were leaning toward a so-called ‘virtual’ ceremony, but that didn’t sit right with the kids…
He says they really wanted to delay high school graduations until the summer, like Placer County is doing, but the Nevada County Health Department felt it was too risky, and that it was likely that large gatherings would not be permitted by then. McFadden says the worst part of it all, is that seniors are being deprived their traditional rite of passage, and that’s been tough on everyone…
Students will be given appointment times, drive up to a stage, where they can walk out, be announced, receive their diploma, and family members can take pictures. The events will begin with Ghidotti High School nest weekend, with other schools following into early June.
