Nevada City’s Measure C was the highest special tax passing measure in California. The measure needed two-thirds vote for approval, and has received over 83 percent. The three-eighths of a cent sales tax increase will allow Fire Station 54 to stay open, and will also pay for another officer for the policde department. City manager Mark Prestwich credits city residents for understanding the problem, and stepping up to solve it…
The fire station had previously been staffed with one city firefighter, and two from the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District, but they decided to pull their fighters out of there as part of a cost-cutting measure last year. Prestwich says the new sales tax goes into effect April 1 of next year…
The new tax is expected to generate about 432-thousand dollars a year.
