Mental Evaluation Approved For Murder Suspect

The mental competency of an 82-year-old Penn Valley man accused in the shooting death of his live-in caretaker has been questioned. Assistant Nevada County District Attorney Chris Walsh says the defense presented an evaluation on Robert Steuber to the judge. And based on that report, another doctor has been appointed to conduct a more in-depth review…

But Walsh says the review is based more on Steuber’s ability to following the legal proceedings, while not believing Steuber was mentally incapacitated during the crime…

A status report has been scheduled for October 19th. Steuber also uses a wheelchair and also has medical and hearing problems. Authorities say he murdered 67-year-old Sandra Lebarron, in July, during an argument.
