Mental Health First Aid for Public Safety

Nevada City Police Department is teaming up with Nevada County Behavioral Health for training in dealing with  people with mental health problems they encounter  in the course of their police work. Nevada City Police Chief Tim Foley says the 5 STEP plan is an 8 hour course that will be taught by Donna Hendricks, a public safety certified instructor with Nevada County Behavioral Health. The program is called Mental Health First Aid for Public Safety.

The training is being provided free of cost and will take place on two separate Wednesdays so that all the officers in the Nevada City Police Department will have the opportunity to receive the training.

Chief Foley says he was fortunate to receive similar training in the Bay Area when he was working with the San Francisco Police Department.

Foley says the Nevada City Police Department will be  reaching out to other are law enforcement agencies to see if they would also like to attend.
