More Tax Assessment Hikes Nevada Co Consolidated

Unlike neighboring fire districts, special taxes and benefit assessments for the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District go up routinely most years. The district’s Finance Manager, Jeff Van Groningen, says the Board of Directors is considering another modest increase of two-point-seven percent for the special tax and three-percent for the benefit assessment. Those increases are near the maximum allowed, under the consumer price index, that doesn’t require the approval of property owners…

In the March Primary, a substantial assessment increase for the Higgins Fire District failed to get two-thirds approval for the fourth time in ten years. The Penn Valley District is proposing a similar increase, but only by mail to parcel owners, which means only majority approval is needed.

Its time taxpayers considered changing property taxes to a one time fee rather than a tax in perpetuity. Many retired seniors have lost their homes due to this kind of incompetent use of funds that rely on stealthy property tax increases. Local government is drunk on our money and we need to cut them off!
