Governor Newsom has apparently placed a deadline for people unable to pay their property taxes on time due to the coronavirus emergency. The second payment deadline was April 10th. While counties have already been granting waivers for the 10-percent penalty on late payments, the governor has now signed an executive order allowing waivers through May of next year. Nevada County Treasurer-Tax Collector, Tina Vernon, says they’re still trying to make sense of the order…
But the extension is not actually going to apply to very many Nevada County property owners. Vernon says 96-percent have already made the recent deadline…
Which means there will not be any significant impact on revenue for such county services as schools, fire protection, and law enforcement. Vernon says they’ve received about 100 waiver requests out the 60-thousand property taxpayers in the county, with about 20 to 30 granted. The deadline to file a request had been June 30th, but Vernon says that may also change, under the governor’s order.
