Much Higher PILT Payment For Nevada County

This year’s PILT payment to Nevada County is on the way. PILT stands for Payment In Lieu of Taxes, a federal program that mitigates the impact to government and schools from the loss of certain property taxes. Beason is the county’s representative with Rural County Representatives of California, which lobbies Congress for the money each year, to ensure that the funding is included in the federal budget, although it is legally required. The money goes into a county’s general fund, making it discretionary…

The payment covers over 214-thousand acres that’s taken off the county’s tax roll each year.
