NCHS Lecture – Shootout at Rocky Canyon

The Nevada County Historical Society Speaker Night presentation tonight  will feature the story of the Shootout at Rocky Canyon, that occurred about 30 miles north of Placerville above Todds Valley in December 1854.

Local Historian, Linda Jack says, unannounced to them, 11 bandits were laying in wait at a flat part of the trail.

But Captain Jonathan Davis became the hero of the day when he single-handedly with a revolver and a Bowie knife took out all of the Bandits.
His story was so incredible that many who later read accounts of the battle initially doubted the veracity of the story.
Jack says the Shootout at Rocky Canyon became a media sensation with newspaper coverage from San Francisco to New York. Nevada County Historical Society Speaker Night with Linda Jack will be at the Madelyn Helling Library Community Room this evening (9/17)  beginning at 7 pm. Presentations are free to the public and last about one hour.
