NCHS Speaker Night Features “Cemeteries of the Western Sierra”

Nevada County Historical Society Speaker Night this evening will feature Archeologist, Christopher Ward talking about the history of local historic cemeteries. Ward is the author of a new book, titled “Cemeteries of the Western Sierra”, and says cemeteries are more than a final resting place for the dead; they are a gateway to our shared history.

He says every hand-carved granite or marble monument, every faded wooden markers holds a clue. Western Sierra
populations boomed with the discovery of gold and often dwindled as gold fever waned. and Cemeteries of the Western Sierra uses the lens of the cemetery to glimpse a rich and disappearing history. Unfortunately many of these historic resting places are under threat.

Nevada County Historical Society Speaker Night is tonight at 7pm at the Madelyn Helling Library Community room. the event is free and open to the public, but they suggest you come early for a seat as they have been experiencing standing room only crowds.
