NCHS Speaker Night Features the Secession of Rough and Ready

Did it really happen or is the story of Rough and Ready’s secession from the Union just a myth. The truth will come out this Thursday night as the Nevada County Historical Society Speaker Night features historian and author Maria Brower speaking to the unique story that has been handed down for 165 years.

While there is always a grain of truth in every tradition, this story has grown in scope over the years and had not really become popular until 1952. Brower will be sharing from her latest book, “The Myth, The Man and the Mystery, the Story of the Secession of Rough and Ready”  that brings to light the historical truth about the secession tradition, the facts, and solves the mystery of who E.F Brundage was, the man whose name is synonymous with Rough and Ready Secession. Speaker night is Thursday evening (Oct. 15th), at 7pm at the Madelyn Helling Library Community Room. Presentations are free and open to the public.
