Before the gold rush people in California didn’t seem to be in much of a hurry, but after gold was struck, speed was the new imperative to transport shiploads of frenzied fortune seekers to out-back mining districts. Providing the transportation was a natural transition for stages in the eastern states that were quickly being repleaced by the railroad.
